Bentley to use 3D Scanning in build of new 4½-litre Blower cars standard

Bentley has announced that it will build a new series of 4½-litre 'Blower' cars from scratch, using original moulds and 3D scans of existing cars. The new build of 12 matching cars will be individually handcrafted by a team of specialists from Bentley’s bespoke coachwork division, Mulliner. Only four original ‘Team Blowers’ were built for racing in the late 1920s. Now, using a combination of generations of handcraftsmanship skills and the very latest digital technology, the 1929 Team Blower will be the master example for 12 continuations - one for each race that the original fleet of four Team Blowers competed in. The Bentley Blower Continuation Series was announced by Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Adrian Hallmark, who commented: “As we continue ...

3D scanning technology helps Porsche restore original 917 icon standard

The iconic Porsche 917 race car was introduced in 1969 and brought Porsche its first win at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1970. The 917 was made more famous by starring in Steve McQueen's 1971 film ‘Le Mans.’ In preparation for the forthcoming “50 years of the 917” anniversary event, the Porsche Museum decided to restore the original longtail 917 (917-001) back to how it looked on its original appearance at the 1969 Geneva Auto Show.   917-001 is transformed into a Le Mans winner In September 1970, after Porsche’s victory at Le Mans, the 917-001 was converted into the winning 1970s short-tail version. Various modifications were made before the car was exhibited at the Paris Motor Show, and eventually became a ...

Modern Reverse Engineering Solutions – 3D Scanning Classic Vehicles image

The challenge of maintaining classic vehicles A key challenge for the owners of classic cars is maintaining them, both in terms of bodywork and mechanical components. Modern engineering technologies, such as reverse engineering can help ensure that your prized vehicle can enjoy a long future automotive life. The ability to find highly engineered, quality, replacement spare parts is an important aspect of this challenge, as is the availability of engineering drawings for components, especially in cases of high value and rare vehicles.  The difficulty of this task increases exponentially for older and rarer vehicles, especially where the original manufacturer may not still exist. Reverse Engineering – combining technology with traditional engineering However modern technologies and engineering techniques can combine with classic engineering principles to resolve ...

PES Scanning engineers help create car for supermodel’s Italian Adventure image

Maserati 4200 road car

It’s not often that you get a call to help create a unique car for a former supermodel, but that was the case for the PES Scanning team this summer. Last weekend the quiet Italian town of Castell’Arquato, south of Milan was transformed as the cream of Italian supercars and motorbikes, plus 500 top cyclists took part in the inaugural Best of Italy Festival 2016. Maserati brand ambassador Jodie Kidd required something a little bit different to race up the hill climb at the festival and a plan was born to convert a Maserati 4200 road car into a replica of the famous 320S monoposto concept car that was displayed by the company at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show. The PES Scanning team, located at the Advanced ...

3D scans help create custom Maserati for inaugural ‘Best of Italy’ event gallery

Our small part in helping produce a custom Maserati for Jodie Kidd’s participation in a celebration of Italian brands, food and wine. The inaugural Best of Italy’ Festival will take place between September 16-18 in Castell’Arquato, Italy. Over 150+ Supercars and Motorbikes, as well as 500 top cyclists will take part in this celebration of all things Italian. As part of this the event organisers commissioned GT Forte Ltd to produce an exclusive one-off custom Maserati, based on the 2001 Maserati 320S concept car, to be driven at the event by supermodel Jodie Kidd. The base car used was a Maserati 4200 Spyder, redesigned to replicate the original ‘barchetta’ style of the 320S, with a small windscreen in front of the driver, a visible roll-over bar with aerodynamic fairing in the ...

3D Scanning Ability Helps Bring History Back To Life image

Imperial War Museum

PES engineers played a key part in bringing history back to life in a gallery for the Imperial War Museum. The Museum were planning a new interactive display entitled ‘Extraordinary Heroes’, celebrating tales of heroic endeavour resulting in the awards of either the George Cross or Victoria Cross. One such story was that of PC Tony Gledhill GC who pursued and eventually apprehended a gang of armed robbers, including the infamous John McVicar, in South East London in the 1960’s. During the chase PC Gledhill’s 1962 Wolseley 6/110 Mk II police car was damaged and it was decided to include an accurate model of the car within the display. As the model would need to reflect the crash damage that had been ...
